-- to deal with that is to say no, that is not to. we're in boston, we're in kuwait. we have 2000 mosques. i don't think a straight effective quite frankly. i think a much better approach is an approach which combined with the kind of things we do with exchange programs and other softer means, public diplomacy 2.0, to get to a point where people can believe that. that the pernicious belief. it's wrong but people can believe. it doesn't mean they will kill us. so those are the goals. it is a battle of ideas, but it's a battle of ideas that will take a long time to win. i do think and public diplomacy we sometimes forget the imports of that ideological struggle, which may be the most important of all. >> i think i would say it somewhat differently but you've heard me say earlier that i believe quite passionately that public diplomacy is there to ensure that everything we do that we achieve our foreign policy goals and objectives, which frankly very country to country, region to region. and so in some parts of the world, some of the struggles we've been talking about are higher than they are in

when i was a kid. i grew up in the suburbs of boston. and we used to go in and visit boston. and sometimes we'd go to the mta, metropolitan transit authority. it's the underground train, electrified. the train rides into two rails, and there's a third rail. and guess what the third rail is for, gang? it's 5,000 volts. that's the source of energy. now the third rail is a little higher. and what the train does, it has a little brush all the time scraping. and so it gets 5,000 volts between that brush and the rail, see? 5,000 volts runs your motor, and these things are motor-driven, electrified rails. well, we kids, we used to do something that, looking back, i'm not so proud of it. but let me tell you what we used to do. we used to get on the rail there. we'd get up in there, okay? we'd be in the platform and the trains are coming by here. now, what we would do-- and we found out that we could get the people on the platform very excited-- we jump down on the pit. and we jump down-- you're not supposed to do that. [laughter] but they got a white line here. but we would do it an

to boston had their service interrupted. dozens and dozens of new jersey transit locomotives and rail cars were damaged by flooding. and so today i'm proud to announce that we expedited $25 million in transportation funding to help ease that situation. but some commuters into new york, for example, from my home state of new jersey are still suffering four-hour commutes with rail service only about half of what it normally is, largely because there's still not enough power for all the trains. in the meantime, new jersey has added subsidized ferry service to make up the difference with the department of transportation providing over 300 -- the federal department of transportation providing over 300 buses to help serve those new ferry lines, including one out of liberty state park. here's another photograph of the extraordinary power that sandy's surge lifted boats on to the rail bridge along the north jersey coastline. amazingly, through the hard work of new jersey transit workers, this devastated rail line might be able to resume limited service by the end of this week. but this line, like
